How to Type Emoji on Every Device (2026 Guide)
You know the emoji you want to use — but how do you actually type it? Every device has a different way to access the emoji keyboard. Here's the complete guide for every platform, including shortcuts that most people don't know about.
🪟 Windows 10 & Windows 11
Method 1: Emoji Panel (Fastest)
Press Win + . (Windows key + period) or Win + ; (Windows key + semicolon).
This opens the emoji picker anywhere you can type — browsers, Word, Notepad, Discord, Slack, everywhere. You can also access kaomoji ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and symbols like © ™ ° from the same panel.
Method 2: Touch Keyboard
Right-click the taskbar → Show touch keyboard button. Click the keyboard icon in the system tray, then click the emoji button. The touch keyboard includes emoji search and recently used.
Method 3: Copy-Paste from the Web
Can't find a specific emoji? Browse emojis on EmojiNB and click any emoji to copy it — works everywhere. The 😀 grinning face and 😂 face with tears of joy are just a click away.
Pro tip: The Windows emoji panel has a search bar at the top. Start typing "heart" or "fire" and it filters instantly. Much faster than scrolling through categories.
🍎 Mac (macOS)
Method 1: Emoji & Symbols Viewer
Press Control + Command + Space (⌃ + ⌘ + Space). This opens the Character Viewer with emoji at the top. Search, browse categories, or scroll through your frequently used emojis.
Method 2: Fn/Globe Key
On newer Macs with a Globe key (🌐), press it once to open the emoji picker. On older keyboards, use the Fn (Function) key — single press opens emoji.
Method 3: Touch Bar (Older Macs)
If your MacBook has a Touch Bar, emoji suggestions appear automatically in supported apps. Tap the emoji icon on the Touch Bar to browse all options.
📱 iPhone & iPad (iOS / iPadOS)
If the Emoji Keyboard is Already Enabled:
Tap the globe icon 🌐 or emoji face 😊 on the keyboard (bottom left). Tap again to switch back to your regular keyboard.
If Emoji Keyboard is NOT Enabled:
- Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards
- Tap Add New Keyboard... → Select Emoji
- The globe/emoji icon will now appear on your keyboard
Search Emoji on iPhone:
Once the emoji keyboard is open, tap the search field above the emoji grid and type a word like "laugh" or "heart." iOS will show matching emojis instantly — a major time-saver.
Emoji Suggestions While Typing:
Type a word like "pizza" or "happy" and iOS will suggest relevant emojis in the predictive text bar above the keyboard. Tap to replace the word with the emoji.
🤖 Android
Gboard (Google Keyboard — Most Common)
Tap the emoji face icon 😊 next to the space bar. If you don't see it, long-press the comma key or the Enter key — depending on your Gboard version.
Samsung Keyboard
Tap the emoji icon on the bottom row, or long-press the microphone/keyboard switch button and select emoji.
Emoji Search on Android:
On Gboard, the emoji panel has a search bar at the top. Type any word and matching emojis appear instantly — this works in all apps, from WhatsApp to Instagram.
💻 Chromebook
Press Search/Launcher key + Shift + Space to open the emoji picker. Or right-click in any text field and select Emoji from the context menu.

Emoji Not Showing Up?
If emojis appear as blank boxes □ or weird characters, here's what to do:
- Update your OS: New emojis require updated operating systems. Windows 11, macOS Ventura+, iOS 17+, and Android 14+ support the latest emojis.
- Update your browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all support emoji natively — but make sure you're on the latest version.
- Font issue: Some Linux distributions may need emoji fonts installed. Run
sudo apt install fonts-noto-color-emojion Ubuntu/Debian.
